in europe everybody wears them on their right hand. i was just wondering what the reason is..

That’s odd. There’s something with the left ring finger where people say that there is a vein that goes from there all the way to the heart. That’s probably how it started.

europe does everything backwards from the U.S. like they drive on the left side of the road. weird, i know.

Ancient Egyptians believed that a vein of love went directly to the heart. By placing the ring on the third finger of the left hand you capture your beloved’s heart. Although science has shown there is no such direct connection, this practice continues to this day.

So we don’t mess it up when we punch people in the face?
Seriously though – the idea behind it is that the vein from the third finger on the left hand runs directly to the heart. The custom started back in ancient Egypt.
Now as to why it is the right hand in Europe, I would be interested to hear about that.

its believed to be the "vein of love"

I have never heard anyone else wearing it on the right hand. I thought everyone wore it on the left. The left is because it is the hand closest to the heart.

Did you know that wearing the right on your hand indicates the person is a widow/widower or divorced in the USA?

Because the English wear them on their left hands.
Almost all American traditions originate either in England, Scotland, or Ireland.

Not everyone in Europe does. My fiance is from the UK and all of his relatives, friends, acquaintances, etc outside of the US who are married wear them on the left hand. While there may be some areas where some people wear them on the right hand, that isn’t true for the majority there or anywhere else.
It stems from the legend that ancient Egyptians and Romans believed there was a vein that ran directly from the left ring finger to the heart.

More than you ever wanted to know above.
Personal Observation: Most sovereigns wear a ring of state on their right hand, as do Arch-Bishops and the Pope. The Pope’s ring is of his Papal Arms, and is destroyed/defaced upon his death.

tradition, it was believed waaayyyyyy back in the day that a vein that went from your left ring finger ran up to your heart, symbolism i guess

That’s not true. In Scotland, they wear their engagement ring on the right hand, wedding ring on their left…..straight from a Scot!!!

Traditionally, it was believed that the left hand ring finger was the only one to have a vein that ran straight to the heart. Now we know that this isn’t really true, but the antiquated tradition carries on.

The reason why European wears on the right hand is;
A traditional reason to wear the wedding ring on the right hand stems from Roman custom. The Latin word for left is "sinister", which in addition to this sense also has the same senses as the English word. The Latin word for right is "dexter", a word that evolved into "dexterity". Hence, the left hand had a negative connotation and the right a good one.
