What is the difference between a wedding band and engagement ring?

AND why would anybody want to spend 1000$ in these economic times for 2 different rings when they both symbolize the same basic idea, that your heart belongs to someone else.
Doesn’t a promise ring suffice as an engagement ring? I mean, they both mean the same thing, that you are promised, taken, etc. Some of the promise rings are expensive enough to be wedding rings.

i believe you can just skip the engagement ring and go straight for the wedding ring at the ceremony. the people who are still spending so much money on TWO rings… well, i guess they’re just really traditional or perhaps it just really means something special to them to have two rings.

anywho, an engagement ring is a promise that you’re going to marry someone. a wedding ring is a promise to stay faithful to the vows you made on your wedding day.

They often are sold as a set, the engagement part usually having a stone (diamond) the band often being plain. You wear the one before the marriage to show that you are betrothed, and receive the band as part of the ceremony to signify the marriage. It is part of our social tradition in western culture. There is no law that you must follow that.

Today more people live together, so they might not want an engagement ring.

It depends how formal you are andhow much you want to follow tradition. As we were not going to get married straight away after getting engaged we opted for an engagement ring. My fiancé also enjoyed designing and having the engagement ring made for me and the whole surprise element. The wedding band will be plainerbut made to fit the engagement ring and is what is put on during the ceremony. Some people choose to take their engagement ring off after they are married and only wear for special occasions but others like me want to wear them together. As they say you get what you pay for so if you spend more buying a material like platinum it will last forever whereas a cheaper metal like white gold will rub off.

I got an engagement ring when he asked. It shows our plans.. an engagement ring is a promise from him to me… We (together) bought a pair of wedding rings, matching, for seriously, about $400 for the pair to be exchanged at the ceremony as a symbol of commitment.

The ring is just a symbol. The name of the ring is just a marketing idea. A ring by any other name, is still a ring.

It’s the commitment and love that counts, and that is priceless -with or without a ring.

If you simply must have fine jewelry, do not waste hard earned money that could go for food, mortgage, leisure on a real diamond. Go with cubic zirconia.
